Day 37: The Steps

Inhale – I breathe

As I wait with breath,

I thank You for

providing me drink

from Your living cup.

For, I know in my thirst,

it is but one taste

that from deepest depths

I am then lifted up.

Exhale – I fear

I fear the coming sip

might bring back my pain,

will I drown in

swallowing darkness once again?

I know it is You

who will carry me out,

yet memory to my soul

endlessly screams and shouts.

Inhale – I step

I step forward, I will relinquish

this sorrow unto You,

yet dread of the past

keeps me bound to place.

My intentions restrained,

I try to shift my weight,

just one single step

to drown in Your loving embrace.

Exhale – I approach

My dearest child, it’s okay,

remember just this;

surrender your aching feet

to that trouble and concern,

entrust their path to Me,

for I've shifted highest mountains

before you ever were born.

Inhale – I hear

So don’t worry

and dwell on some unknown dread;

allow the Spirit to enter thy weary head.

When you drink this next sip

let it pull you to depths underneath,

then look up to the Heaven’s

My willing hand reaches beneath.

With one more step now taken,

confide in Me,

and with your next faithful step

simply leap and breathe…

Exhale – I drink

Before you begin your day:

This poem symbolizes a journey. It is the path we walk every time we savor the Mass. To savor means to taste and enjoy completely. As the wine touches your lips, are you fully present? Can you taste the love of Christ on your tongue? Do you accept this love completely? Are you savoring each step that brings you closer to the pouring in of His presence?

Let us journey there now. Put yourself in the line. Your steps travel closer to His Blessed Body and Blood. There are many who cannot savor the wine - may this be an invitation to travel with Him here:

Step 1: Inhale – breathe

Let your breath thank Him for providing You with this blessed drink. Let us pray:

Lord, remind me when I thirst,

it is with one taste of You

that from the deepest depths

I can be lifted up.

Step 2: Exhale – fear

Allow the coming sip to wash away all your fear; let all darkness drown in your swallowing. Let us pray:

Lord, remind me it is You

who carries me out,

quench these memories to my soul

drown their screams and shouts.

Step 3: Inhale – step

As you step forward, relinquish all sorrow to Him. Don't let any dread keep you bound to place. Let us pray:

Lord, release any intentions restrained,

be the shift in my weight.

Remind me it is one single step

that drowns me in Your loving embrace.

Step 4: Exhale – approach

You are next, as you wait, listen to Him pray:

My dearest child, I pray:

surrender your burdened feet

from all trouble and concern.

Entrust your path to Me!

I've shifted the highest mountains

before you ever were born.

Step 5: Inhale – hear

You are here, lift the cup to your lips, hear Him say:

Don’t worry or dwell on any unknown dread;

allow the Spirit to enter thy weary head.

As you savor this sip

let it pull you underneath;

look up to the Heaven,

My willing hand reaches beneath.

Take the cup to your lips,

confide in Me,

with this faithful sip

simply leap and breathe…

Exhale – and drink

During your day:

"Jesus said to them,

'You do not know what you are asking.

Can you drink the cup that I drink

or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?'"

(Mark 10: 38)

Read 1 Corinthians 11: 25; Luke 22: 17; 1 Corinthians 10: 21; John 18: 11

Throughout your day:

INHALE: I hunger.

EXHALE: You feed.

(repeat as many times as needed)

Before you end your day:

Choose any of the prayers above to recite. Which step do you see yourself taking at this moment?

Now choose any line(s) from the Lord's prayers above that provides comfort.

Amen.

Goodnight; sleep well; know you are blessed.
