Day 9: We Forgive Those

Is Hate a friend

you’ve known too well?

Has it been the only

companion

as you drown

in that swell?

For laboring years

of life

did it flow?

Is it now buried within;

has it encountered new growth?

Gift after gift

to soul tempting hate offered.

But, He offers something

that heals a soul’s suffering.

In prayer again

we will be

united soon,

and in these words

hate cannot loom.

Many are spoken

but three

wait for us.

In prayer said

can you hear thee?

“We Forgive Those,”

that Priest did say.

And with these

three words,

a soul is cleansed of

hate's relentless decay.

What you might ask

will fill the void where hate lie?

Why a piece of Him

flows through the piece that must die.

Before you begin your day:

Our Father, Who art in Heaven

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses, as

we forgive those (wait)

Do you? Do you forgive ALL those? Or are you selective? Upon what does your forgiveness depend? Relationship? Size of the wound? Time lapsed? Trespass committed?

When you say the Our Father, do you ever stop at this line? And think, "Well, God, You don't mean him/her/them? I mean they did _______________________. It is unforgivable. God doesn't mean for me to forgive that - them - those - does He?"

YES!

I find this line of prayer a particularly difficult one because I tend to hold grudges. Hate is the shield a grudge clings to for protection. I have thought many times, God doesn't mean for me to forgive __________________________. Then, the whisper. Yes, I do.

Let us now continue in the form of a question: who trespass against us?

Who? How did they trespass against you? How long ago? Is it time to ask God to help you forgive? Sit with God for a moment, pray together. It is not easy to pray for those we find it difficult to forgive, so ask our Blessed Lord to help you.

Can you feel His peace-filled flow? When you are ready, let's continue:

lead us not into temptation (loosen the shield of hate from any grudge I now cling)

deliver us from evil. (shroud this void in understanding instead, so I will begin to forgive those)

Amen.

During your day:

Our Father, Who art in Heaven

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Thank you this day for my daily bread,

as I ask you to forgive me my trespasses,
I know I too must forgive ___________________ for trespassing against me.

Lead me out from behind the shield of hate;

deliver me to forgiveness instead.

Read Matthew 6: 9-15

Throughout your day:

INHALE: Forgive me my trespasses.

EXHALE: As I forgive _________________, who trespassed against me.

(repeat as many times as needed)

Before you end your day:

Our Father, Who art in Heaven

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespassed against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Does the prayer offer something different this time? Amen.

Goodnight; sleep well; know you are blessed.
