What to Feed - Intermediate

I'm so excited to be continuing with you. I remember when I first arrived at this juncture filled with both anxiety and determination. The what-ifs and how-to's fueled an unending desire to trudge forward as my dogs' health continued to improve. They began acting as if pups all over again. 

 

Puppies

If you have arrived at this point, and your dog is still under a year old - WOW - I commend you - Congratulations! You may easily begin feeding the menus below. I will leave the weight charts and body condition information below for your convenience. 

 

Calculated at Current Weight

Until 4 months: 8% - 10% of current weight (three feedings/day)

4 to 6 months: 6% to 8% of current weight (three feedings/day)

6 to 8 months: 4% - 6% of current weight (two feedings/day)

8 to 12 months: 3% to 4% of current weight (two feedings/ day)

over 12 months: 3% of current weight (one feeding/day - with one day fast)

 

Calculated at Adult Weight

Until 6 months: 2% of adult weight (three feedings/day)

6 to 12 months: 2.25% to 2.5% of adult weight (two feedings/day)

over 12 months: 2.5% to 3% of adult weight (one feeding/day - with fast)

 

Body Condition: What to look for

As the pup enjoys adulthood (or if he or she is already there), you should be able to feel the backbone but have the ribs covered with a moderate layer of flesh. In my experience, a thinner dog, as opposed to a somewhat heavier dog, is always a healthier dog.

 

 

 

What to Feed Now

We are opening up the food chain now. The beef and chicken you and your dog have found comfort with will still provide nutrition, but let's add some prey. This is your intermediate guide to feeding, and offers an even better menu, enhancing nutrition. Again, I have many friends that choose to stay here as they begin to see even more benefit. Now, I will challenge you to move forward. How long? Again, that is entirely up to you - remember - when you are ready - your dog will be.

 

Below are some reminders of where we've been and some new rules to take us where we want to go: 

 

1. You want to aim for three protein sources during a week (this is a minimum, you can add more).

 

2. Remember that it is about maintaining balance over the course of the week - not every day. You'll see examples of this in the menus below.

 

3. Do not get caught up with any food that needs to be processed (i.e., grains and most vegetables) Your dog would not build a campfire, boil water, and cook vegetables and grains - so neither should you. Vegetation will be provided through the animals 

consumed - they eat the vegetation - your dog eats them. The food chain at its finest. 

 

4. Make sure the meat you choose has NO ADDED HORMONES, PRESERVATIVES, OR ANTIBIOTICS.

 

5. As you now have become comfortable with raw feeding, it is essential to add some liver into the ground portion of your daily menu. You don't want this to account for more than 5% of the total daily feed. I recommend chopping it up and mixing it into the ground because although imperative for your dog's health, it is not a favorite upon the menu items. 

 

6. If you want to substitute pork of any kind - YOU MUST freeze it for 48 hours before feeding as pigs can carry parasites that can be passed on to dogs. I do have friends that use pork as an occasional substitute, but they do so with this knowledge. 
 

 

The Intermediate Feeder's Weekly Menu

 

I will again use the example of a 50 lb dog requiring 2% of his adult weight in raw food daily:

 

This example yields 19.2 ounces

(or 1.2 lbs) of food daily fed at one feeding and includes a one day fast. Therefore, the daily amount of 1 lb is multiplied by seven then divided by six days to equal the 1.2 lbs or 19.2 ounces of required feed. So the dog is receiving all he needs in the six days.

 

As a reminder: If using this menu for puppies (and you can) do not fast. You will not begin the fasting day until 1 year of age. Just calculate using tables above and feed that amount every day according to schedule.

 

Total of 19.2 Ounces:

 

Monday:

12.1 ounces of chicken backs, wings, necks, or thighs (depending upon the size of your dog)

7.1 ounces of ground beef

 

 

Tuesday:

11.1 ounces of ground turkey

1.0 ounces chopped liver mixed into above

7.1 ounces of beef ribs (size will depend upon your dog's size)

 

Wednesday:

11.1 ounces of ground beef

1.0 ounces mixed berries (frozen or fresh)

7.1 ounces of fish (choose mackerel, herring, sardines, or salmon) Make sure the fish if canned is NOT in brine and there is no added sodium

 

Thursday:

11.1 ounces of chicken backs, wings, necks, or thighs (depending upon the size of your dog)

1.0 ounces chopped liver mixed into above

7.1 ounces of ground turkey

 

Friday:

11.1 ounces of chicken backs, wings, necks, or thighs (depending upon the size of your dog)

1.0 ounces mixed berries (frozen or fresh)

7.1 ounces of ground beef

 

Saturday:

11.1 ground turkey

1.0 ounces raw egg - the whole egg including the shell (allow them to break it open by themselves once they catch on to what's inside)

7.1 ounces of beef ribs (size will depend upon your dog's size)

 

Sunday:

Fast

 

Final Thoughts

A place where whole prey (ground if needed) is provided not every day, but as if the dog were  surviving - maximizing his body's potential. genuinely
