Day 14: Conversation

“Come to me,

all who are weary,

and I will give you rest.”

Oh my sweet Lord,

if I am to continue –

a sorrowful confession

must I contribute.

My answer, oppressed,

let me explain to Thee,

Lord, a child such as this,

bound, but never freed.

A body once laden

with grime and bruises,

turns down a path

dampened by sin,

misled chooses.

Tired and heavy,

I recline at your feet.

A restful heart, You return

support me now, finally,

a steady beat.

“Do not be afraid,

I will comfort thee,

for I am always with you,

My sweet child, can’t you see?

I know fear paralyzes

a stained memories soul,

don't forget I

held your hand

not so long ago.

So afraid the past

will again take you away;

you persistently allow

falsities to

lead a heart astray.

It was not in My absence

that gave the past presence,

but the fact we speak now –

grace sent by your

Father in Heaven.”

Before you begin your day:

Do you pray? I'm sure if you're reading this, the answer is an astounding YES. But how do you pray? Do you speak? Do you listen? Is your prayer a conversation?

Often, when one prays, it begins, "Dear God, ______________." Then ends. Do you ever linger and listen? If you hear or feel nothing, do you doubt His presence?

Turn your focus, for a moment, to someone dear to you. This person could be a family member, friend, or coworker. For the next few minutes, imagine them. Recall a recent conversation. Were you there to speak or listen? How about them? What did the discussion require? Advice? Comfort? Understanding? Patience? Were there pauses during your communication? Were you comforted in this lapse by their presence? Did you leave the conversation fulfilled? Why? Most likely because, no matter the outcome, you felt an integral part of a relationship. You shared a dependence. There was active participation, connection, between you and another.

All relationship requires this activeness. It must both demand of you and supply for you. The foundation both parties rely upon to fulfill this exchange is conversation. We must give of ourselves and be willing to receive their offering, whatever it might be.

Have you ever had to comfort a loved one and not known quite what to donate? All you can do is hold them in your arms, and say I am here for you. Communication doesn't always request words.

This beautiful relationship we are referring to is why God grants us the gift of prayer. So, you will know you are never alone. You and God are integral pieces of this link. You share a dependence. There must be active participation, connection, between you and Him. Depend on this, for He is there. And, let Him depend upon you to accept all that He longs to provide.

You only need the willingness to give of yourself and readiness to receive what He offers. And, when God knows His answer is not what you need to hear at that moment, feel His embrace. He envelops you in His arms and says:

Do not be afraid,

I will comfort thee,

for I am always with you,

My sweet child, can’t you see?

During your day:

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.

(Psalms 5: 3)

Matthew 11: 28-30; Jeremiah 33: 3; 1 John 5: 14; Romans 10: 17

Throughout your day:

INHALE: Dear, God, I speak.

EXHALE: I wait; I listen.

(repeat as many times as needed)

Before you end your day:

Dear, God... (speak)

Now, listen. Feel the Holy Spirit move through you.

And if you feel nothing, be comforted in His embrace:

Do not be afraid,

I will comfort thee,

for I am always with you,

My sweet child, can’t you see?

Goodnight; sleep well; know you are blessed.
